Ethiopia is a country with land area of over 1.1 million square km and it is the second most popular in the Sub-Saharan Africa and third from the whole continent of Africa with estimated population of around 80 million. The population growth is estimated at about 2.8 % and this then becomes two fold every quarter of a century. This is a major challenge to be properly addressed with equivalent economic growth of the country.

Most of the population of Ethiopia earns their living from refined agriculture. The country is characterized by low water supply coverage and less sanitation facilities well as poor hygiene condition.

People go through deforestation to obtain more agricultural land and more energy to meet their demand. Mines and minerals are the most unexplainable resources of the country. Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Regional State (SNNPRS) is one of the densely populated regions in the country with total population of approaching 15.3 million and with an area of 110931.9 square km. It is a museum of Nations , Nationalities and Peoples where there are more than 56 Nations who are living peacefully with harmony. The region is divided into thirteen “Zones” and 134 “Woredas”. Population growth of the region is about 2.9 %. The highest population density of the region is YergaChaffe with 1150 people/km 2 .

As the name indicates, our bureau is responsible for water supply, sanitation, irrigation, mines and energy. It consists of two sectors namely water supply sector, irrigation sector and mines and energy egency.

As is all known, most of the issues like water supply sanitation hygiene, irrigation, mines and energy have been identified as a key issue in the contest of NMDG.

Based on the above, we have water resources management policy, strategy, and we have a program also.

Among the policy principles and provisions devolving ownership and management autonomy to the possible level, integration of different sectors more involvement of communities at all levels are same. We are involving all partners including the private sectors, NGOs, so that provision of service will be improved.
